What is an anagram?

An anagram is a word made by rearranging the letters of another word, using every letter exactly once. Listen becomes silent, enlist and tinsel. Anagrams show up in crosswords, cryptic clues, word puzzles and tile games such as Scrabble and Words With Friends.

An anagram solver does the searching for you. It checks your letters against a dictionary and lists every word that fits, including shorter words hidden inside your letters, so you can spot the best play or finish the puzzle.

Tips for Scrabble and Words With Friends

  • Enter your whole rack and add a ? for a blank tile. Blanks are worth zero points, and the solver shows them as empty tiles in the results.
  • Add the letter already on the board to your rack to find words that connect to it, then use Contains to keep only words that include it.
  • Switch between Scrabble and Words With Friends point values: letters such as H, W and Y are worth different amounts in each game.
  • Use Starts with or Ends with to find words that extend a word on the board, such as adding -ing or -ed.
  • Sort by points to see the highest-scoring words first.

Frequently asked questions

What is an anagram?

An anagram is a word or phrase made by rearranging all the letters of another word. For example, LISTEN can be rearranged into SILENT, ENLIST and TINSEL.

How does the anagram solver work?

Type your letters and the solver compares them with every word in the selected dictionary. A word is shown when it can be spelled using your letters, with each letter used no more often than you entered it. Results are grouped by word length, longest first.

How do I use blank tiles or wildcards?

Type a question mark (?) or an underscore (_) for each unknown letter or blank tile. A blank can stand for any letter and is worth zero points in the score shown next to each word.

What is the difference between all words and exact anagrams?

All words shows every word that can be made from some or all of your letters. Exact anagrams shows only words that use every letter you entered.

Which dictionary should I choose?

The Scrabble dictionary is based on the public-domain ENABLE word list of about 173,000 words and is best for word games. The Common English dictionary has about 22,000 everyday words and gives shorter, more familiar results.

Can I use this for Scrabble and Words With Friends?

Yes. Enter your rack, add a ? for each blank tile, and choose Scrabble or Words With Friends scoring to see letter point values. The ENABLE word list is widely used for word games but may differ slightly from the official dictionary of your game, so check before challenging a play.

Is my data private and does it work offline?

Yes. All solving happens in your browser, and the letters you type are never sent to a server. After your first visit the page can also work offline.
